Many youngsters, particularly women students and professionals with little political background, have been fielded by mainstream parties in Bathinda.

The candidates say they are in it for development and to change the way people look at politics.

Mandeep Kaur (26), who has done MCom in finance and was working with a private firm, has been fielded by AAP from ward number 33. She is aiming to bring a revolution in the civic politics and curb corruption. Talking to The Tribune, Mandeep said she wanted to inspire youngsters to take up politics as a career and remove corruption.

“Instead of blaming the system, one should get actively involved in it to clean it from the inside. In my ward, there is water shortage and problem pertaining to water-logging as well. Also, some streets maps have not been approved by the MCB. So, I decided to contest the polls and bring about the change in society that I want to see,” she said.

Mandeep’s way of campaigning has also attracted much attention. On Thursday night, she, along with her supporters, took out a ‘jaago’ in her ward.

Sareena Goyal (30), who has done MA, MPhil and is currently pursuing PhD, has been fielded by the BJP from ward number 27. She has been facing repeated backlash with unidentified persons tearing her posters or blackening her face on those.

Unfazed by such incidents, she terms her entry into politics as a social initiative. A postgraduate, Gurpreet Kaur (29) is contesting from ward number 41 on AAP ticket. “A lot of problems are being faced by the women in my ward. I want to be their voice. They run from pillar to post to get their pension or other scheme cards, but nobody listens to them. I will ensure that their work is done with ease,” she said.
