Forest Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak today laid the foundation stone of a ‘Nagar Van’ at Kothi Pandita village located on the outskirts of the city.
Dr Sanjeev Tiwari, Conservator of Forests, North Circle, Hoshiarpur, said ‘Nagar Van’ would be a forest area to be developed in the vicinity of a city, which will also be easily accessible to local residents. It will provide for a natural environment for recreation, biodiversity conservation and supported services like water and soil conservation. “This concept will significantly reduce the heat being emanated from various sources from a city,” he said.
“It is a Union Government project spread over a period of five years. Our vision is to develop at least one such forest in each city having a municipal corporation or class one status. It will provide a wholesome healthy living environment and will contribute to the growth of smart, clean, green and healthy cities,” he added.
Kataruchak also planted a sapling to mark the occasion. Deputy Commissioner Harbir Singh and SSP Arun Saini were present on the occasion. The total project cost has been pegged at Rs 2.05 crore. “Once completed, the venture will act as the lungs of the city,” added Dr Tiwari.
Kataruchak claimed on offer will be a 5-km nature trail, cycle track, battery operated vehicles and a restaurant. A total of 123 hectares of area will be taken up by the Nagar Van Udyan. “Wildlife lovers will be in for a treat. Peacocks and several species of birds will be a common sight,” said Dharamveer, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Pathankot.
Experts claimed the eco-tourism of the area will be given a massive boost.
Dr Tiwari said plans to protect water and air, wilderness and wildlife were in fact plans to protect man.
