Gurdaspur, June 30
Gurdaspur central jail doctors on Thursday “referred” three private doctors, who were arrested in connection with the death of a woman who lost her life during an operation, to the civil hospital —an indication, the deceased’s husband alleged, of “preferential treatment” to the accused.

SSP asks Civil Surgeon to constitute a board to look into sequence of events leading to woman’s death
Sukhraj Singh, husband of the deceased, claimed the doctors’ lobby had managed their colleagues’ stay in the hospital after a local court had remanded them to judicial custody till July 12. He said he would be seeking an explanation as to how the accused doctors were referred to the civil hospital.
Civil Surgeon Dr Vijay Kumar claimed he was not on duty and, hence, “knew nothing about the goings-on”.
Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Dr Chetna admitted the three doctors were shifted from the jail to the hospital on Thursday afternoon.
Sources claim the accused had spent the last night in the hospital before being moved to the central jail in the morning. They were brought back to the hospital in the afternoon.
Sukhraj claimed “the doctors, in connivance with jail officials, were making a mockery of the judicial process”.
Meanwhile, a delegation of private doctors reportedly urged the SSP to dilute the FIR. The doctors wanted the police to clamp Section 304-A of the IPC instead of Section 304 on Dr HS Bhatia, Dr Manjit Singh Babbar and Dr Zorawar Singh Bhatia.
The SSP asked Civil Surgeon Dr Vijay Kumar to constitute a board of doctors, as is warranted by the Supreme Court, to look into the sequence of events leading to the death of Primaldeep Kaur. He also asked the District Attorney to see if Section 304 can be converted into Section 304-A.
