The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) introduced a Safe Food Project to offer chemical residue-free foodgrain, particularly rice, for residents of the state during a seminar here recently.
Dr Manmohan Dhkal, Plant Pathologist, School of Organic Farming, PAU, said under the project, chemical residue-free foodgrain would be provided to the state residents for their good health. As per the proposal, two types of foodgrain would be offered to consumers. One would be pesticides-free and the other would be chemical residue-free. Both qualities shall not harm the health of consumers in any manner and they would get rid of the chemical and poisonous food which was being offered to them presently.
According to experts, organic farming is different from this scheme. An organic product is totally free of pesticides and fertilisers, but the practice is expensive and not affordable for the common man. — OC
