Peddlers change modus operandi

Chandigarh, July 18

Drug peddlers have adopted a new modus operandi when it comes to smuggling of contraband. Now, they can be found wearing the Army uniform or cover short distances on foot.

IGP (Headquarters) Dr Sukhchain Gill said to avoid getting arrested, peddlers prefer to smuggle drugs on “foot”. He said peddlers also preferred to sell drugs in small quantities to ensure that in case they get arrested, the quantity of drug should not be considered commercial. “Instead of hiding contraband at their houses, peddlers use ponds and fields to conceal drugs,” he said.

Dr Gill said, “Following the disclosures of smugglers, drug is either supplied from Shanni-Beli village in Himachal Pradesh or from Kathua district of Jammu amp; Kashmir.”

The IGP said Rohit Sahi, alias Goldy, a resident of Amargarh, was found selling heroin in the Army uniform. The police had seized 50 grams of heroin from his car, he said.

He said the Punjab Police assisted the Gujarat ATS and the Maharashtra Police in interstate operations, which led to the seizure of 147.5 kg heroin.
