Plagued by decades of apathy

Baghapurana Assembly constituency of Moga district is largely a rural area with 36.77 per cent Dalit population. The town was a small village till the early 1970s primarily consisting of three ‘pattis’ — Bagha Patti, Purana Patti and Mughlu Patti.

The constituency is plagued by poor network and transport links. The apathy of the state government to Baghapurana for decades can well be judged from the fact that no government bus service is running on the rural link roads even as thousands of students, employees, workers and common people travel daily.

In the rural areas, the natural drains are full of weed and filth, not only causing foul smell in the adjoining areas but also posing the risk of floods during monsoon, often damaging crops in the nearby areas. “The drain flowing through our village has not been cleaned for several years,” said Baljit Singh, a resident of Langeana village.

Past trend

Maheshinder Singh (SAD) won the seat in 2012. Darshan Singh Brar (Congress) was victorious in 2007, while Sadhu Singh Rajeana (SAD) triumphed twice i.e. in 2002 and 1997. In 1992, it was Vijay Sathi (Janata Dal) who was elected MLA.
