Political slugfest in Fatehgarh Sahib over works

Fatehgarh Sahib, January 10

The tussle between SAD-BSP candidate Jagdeep Cheema and incumbent Congress MLA Kuljit Nagra is getting murkier day by day ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections.

Earlier, Cheema protested against wife of Nagra at the DDPO office alleging that she was getting grants released despite the enforcement of model code of conduct. On Monday, he stopped tractor-trailers carrying bricks for development works in Fatehpur village alleging that it was the violation of the poll code.

Cheema, who went live on his Facebook page, levelled the allegations and said he had complained to Deputy Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur, but no action has been taken so far. He said it’s the breach of code of conduct.

In response, a large number of sarpanches-affiliated with Congress and block Samiti members led by MLA Nagra took out a protest march and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. Nagra alleged that Cheema was stopping the ongoing development works in villages.

The MLA said the works were underway before the enforcement of the model code of conduct. He said if Cheema has any problem, he should complain to the Deputy Commissioner instead of hampering the ongoing works. The Deputy Commissioner said the ongoing development works can be carried out, but no new work would be allowed to commence. — OC
