Sangrur, September 19

Punjab politics remained the central point of discussion at almost all protest sites of farmers on Sunday. Amid the fast-changing political landscape, farmers said it would have no bearing on their protest as it was non-political.

“The Congress high command should have done it earlier had they any plans to change Capt Amarinder Singh. The new CM and his team will take time to understand the working of officers. Elections, too, are approaching fast,” said Surjan Singh, 75, while protesting at Sangrur.

Another farmer, Kirpal Singh, was of the opinion that the lack of arrest of any big fish in drug cases led to the criticism of former CM and also earned bad name for the Congress. “Though the Congress has arrested many drug smugglers, there are allegations that big fish are still roaming free. In the last elections, the drug smuggling was a big issue, but the Congress has forgotten it now,” he said.

Many praised ex-CM Capt Amarinder Singh for his support to their agitation. “Despite the pressure from the Centre, Capt Amarinder did not create any problems for us. In fact, he openly announced support to farmers,” said Parminder Singh, another farmer.

Many even advised him. “We have heard that he may join BJP, but it would be suicidal for him. We will never accept him as BJP leader. Our protest against BJP will continue until the farm laws are repealed,” said Jaswinder Singh, another farmer. Sangrur BKU Ugrahan block president Gobinder Singh said the change of CM and ministers would not have any impact on their protest, since it was non-political.
