In order to counter the challenge of drone and cross-border smuggling, the Punjab Police along with Border Security Force (BSF) carried out night domination search operation in villages of seven border districts including Jagdev Khurd village in Ajnala here on Thursday night.

Additional Director General of Police (Human Rights) Naresh Arora led the search operation.

The night domination search operation were earlier carried out during the militancy days in Punjab when heavy police force used to visit villages to counter the terrorsim threat.

Arora while speaking to media said such operations would continue in future as well. He was accompanied by IG border range Mohnish Kumar, SSP (Rural) Swapan Sharma, SP Jugraj Singh and other senior police officers.

Armed policemen along with the BSF jawans put up nakas while conducting search operation.

“Joint night search operation with BSF was carried out in seven border districts in Punjab along the 550 km radius of the International Border with Pakistan including Amritsar rural, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fazilka and Batala. Around 100 checkpoints were set up comprising 2,500 cops led by IG and DIG rank officials during the search operation in these districts,” said Arora.

He said drones were posing a big challenge to national security as anti-national elements in Pakistan were using the technique to smuggle explosives, narcotics, arms and ammunition to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the country.

“We have to change our strategy to counter this challenge and the night domination search operation was part of the new strategy. The operation is especially for the border belt to counter drone challenge by sealing the entry points in the second line of defence from the International Border,” he said.

He said the Punjab Police were stressing on installing CCTV cameras in the border as well as within the city areas for detection of crime.
