Amritsar, January 26
Shiromani Akali Dal’s Bikram Singh Maijithia will take on Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar East, the party’s president Sukhbir Badal announced on Wednesday.
Majithia, who was a minister in the previous Akali government and is Badal’s brother-in-law, had fought the 2012 and 2017 assembly elections from Majithia, an assembly segment in Amritsar.
Majithia faces charges in drug cases and was recently given a temporary respite from arrest after Punjab and Haryana High Court gave him three days’ protection so he could appeal the court’s dismissal of his anticipatory bail application in the Supreme Court. He has denied the allegations and accused the Congress government of witch-hunt.
