Punjab sees 16 more deaths, 628 cases

As many as 628 new Covid-19 cases and 16 deaths were reported in Punjab today, signalling an upward swing of the pandemic with 4,222 active cases in the state.

Revenue Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria has also contracted the virus, while an IAS couple posted in Chandigarh too has tested positive.

The highest number of cases have been reported in Hoshiarpur (80), followed by Ludhiana (75), Jalandhar (66) and Kapurthala (65). As many as 1,149 healthcare workers and 4,851 frontline workers also received vaccinations today.

As many as 16 persons also died today after having caught the contagion. The highest number of deaths were reported in Ludhiana and Gurdasapur (three each) followed by Bathinda, Patiala and Nawanshahr (two each).

Around 255 patients have also recovered from the pandemic, with highest recoveries reported from Ludhiana and Nawanshahr.

Till date, 1,81,004 persons have contracted the viral infection and 5,814 have succumbed to the infection in the state.

Minister infected

Amritsar: Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria on Friday tested positive for Covid-19. He is said to have isolated himself at his residence in Chandigarh. A week ago, Congress MLA Sunil Dutti along with 20 members of his family had tested positive. Dutti had organised his daughter’s marriage in Delhi on February 15. TNS
