Punjab VB nabs Ambala man for GST evasion

Chandigarh, August 3

Vigilance Bureau Punjab today arrested an Ambala resident in a two-year-old case of tax evasion.

The arrested man has been identified as Rajinder Singh Sodhi alias Lovely who used to be the main “passer” of vehicles which were allowed to pass check points without paying the requisite GST. A Vigilance spokesperson said Rs 21.65 lakh cash was seized from his house.

He was wanted in a case related to causing a huge loss to the state exchequer for evasion of GST in connivance with Excise and Taxation officers in the state.

The spokesperson said that in this regard, a case FIR No. 8 dated August 21, 2020, under Sections 420, 465, 467, 468, 471, 120-B, 201 IPC and 7, 7(A) and 8 of Prevention of Corruption Act had already been registered at VB flying squad-1 police station at Mohali.

He said this case was registered against a number of Punjab GST/Excise and Taxation officials and passers/mediators for being complicit in causing a huge loss to the state exchequer through provision of escape routes to passers for evasion of GST as well as imposing a lesser amount of penalty during checking of vehicles carrying unfinished (iron scrap) and finished goods. Hesaid during investigation, some officers of the Excise and Taxation Department and passers have already been arrested.
