Rain causes fresh trouble in Muktsar

With the fresh rain on Sunday, the situation has turned worse in Muktsar district as a large number of areas have waterlogged again. A number of roads were waterlogged in Muktsar, Malout and Gidderbaha subdivisions.

Besides, the rainwater entered a number of houses and buildings. The residents are saying that the situation is almost similar of July 15, when the waterlogging had started in the district.

Notably, over one lakh acres are already hit in the district and the fresh rain has increased the worries of farmers. The cotton and paddy crops have already got damaged in a number of villages. Some agriculture experts said the fresh rain would increase the troubles of farmers. Notably, some drains were already overflowing in the region.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had visited the district on Thursday to meet the affected farmers and ordered special girdawari of the crops. Besides, he had ordered the top officers in the district administration to speed up the drainage work.

Till the filing of this report, the rain was on and there is forecast of more rain in coming hours.

Sham Lal Goyal, president, National Consumer Awareness Group, Muktsar district, said: “The district administration has asked all officers to stay at their place of postings during the rainy season, but I tried to contact some officers of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department today and found that they had left the station. I demand strict action against them. The manholes are overflowing and nobody is paying any heed towards it.”

Meanwhile, a set-up of an entertainment fair, which was built in the shape of Titanic ship, collapsed due to rain and speedy winds at the grain market in Malout town today. Luckily, no one got injured.
