Sangrur, October 2
Some labourers continued to work on a road leading to a local college here even after it started raining heavily. Upon being asked to stop by local residents for fear of sub-standard work being carried out, the labourers refused. Thereafter, local residents live-streamed the work on Facebook and demanded a high-level inquiry and action.
“The labourers were laying bitumen near the Zila Parishad office during rain and locals were opposing it. I was passing by, but when I saw the work being done amid rain, I also interfered but they refused to stop. Then I streamed live on Facebook the construction of road amid rain. The government must order a high-level inquiry,” said Jatinder Kalra, a local BJP leader.
After seeing him raising objections, some local shopkeepers, too, joined Kalra and demanded action against the contractor.
“The hard-earned money of taxpayers is being misused by the Public Works Department (PWD) to pay for poor-quality material. When it’s raining, how and why the contractor allowed the labourers to continue work? The government must look into the matter immediately,” said Chamandeep Singh Milkhy, former Shiromani Akali Dal leader.
Despite several attempts, Sangrur executive engineer Naveen Kumar could not be contacted for a comment.
“The construction was stopped immediately after it started raining. We are getting all work done with the use of quality material,” said Ram Piara, junior engineer, Public Works Department.
