The Sangrur City police have booked the managing committee of the local Akal Degree College for Women for allegedly misusing Rs 11 crore and violating other mandatory norms.

The action was taken on the report of the Principal Secretary Higher Education and Language, Punjab.
“The departmental officers’ committee revealed that as per the ledger of the college management, Rs 11 crore have been used illegally and in violation of the norms. Apart from it, there are many more violations done by the college committee after which it has been suspended and a case has been registered. Meanwhile, the DC has been appointed as the administrator of the college,” said Ramandeep Singh, SHO, Sangrur City police station.
Sources said after receiving complaints about the alleged misuse of funds by the college management, the Punjab Government on July 3, 2020 had constituted a high-level committee to carry out a detailed inquiry.
On July 13, 2021, the inquiry committee submitted its report. On December 28, the Director Public Instructions (Colleges), Punjab, sent a copy of the report to the Sangrur college management committee and sought its comments. The managing committee submitted its replies on January 14, 2022. Later to examine the inquiry report and the replies of college management, another departmental officers’ committee was constituted.
In its report, the inquiry panel has alleged that the college management had arbitrarily amended the constitution to make the society as a Trust while the departmental officers’ committee had recommended that the Registrar of Societies should take appropriate action. Apart from it, the departmental officers’ committee has also written to the Punjabi University, Patiala, and other authorities for quick action for the violation of norms.
“After the registration of the case against the college management committee, investigation of the case was transferred to the Barnala police,” the SHO added.
