Rs 130 crore set aside for martyrs' kin in Punjab

Doubling the ex gratia assistance to families of martyrs from the existing Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore, the state government has provided for Rs 130 crore in the 2022-23 fiscal towards this head.

This is an increase of 11 per cent over the allocation made for 2021-22, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said in his Budget speech. Stating that his government accorded due reverence to ex-servicemen, Cheema said with firm commitment towards their welfare, adequate assistance for setting up of old-age home for ex-servicemen at Mohali would be provided during the current financial year.

He said the strength of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) had seen an uptick. NCC units and training centres were being run by the state, he said, while proposing an initial allocation of Rs 5 crore this year for improving infrastructure and creation of new facilities in NCC units and training centres in the state. Besides, Rs 10 crore each had been allocated for the Punjab State War Heroes Memorial and Museum at Amritsar and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh War Museum. The last fiscal’s initial allocation and revised estimates for the Amritsar complex was Rs 18 crore and Rs 14.4 crore, respectively.
