Rs 2 lakh more relief for Issewal gangrape victim

Justice Tejinder Singh Dhindsa, who is executive chairman of the State Legal Services Authority, granted Rs 2 lakh more compensation to the Issewal gangrape victim.
The incident took place on Feburary 8, 2019, near Issewal village on the banks of Sidwan canal. The victim, who was travelling in a car with her friend, was dragged out of the vehicle by six persons. They sexually assaulted the girl and later made a ransom call to one of the victim’s friends.
The State Legal Services Authority member secretary, Arun Gupta, apprised that the girl was provided a compensation of Rs 2 lakh under the Victim Compensation scheme a couple of days ago. Earlier, the victim was given Rs 2.5 lakh interim relief on April 4, 2019.
A local court on March 4, 2022, had sentenced five accused to life imprisonment till death and a juvenile was awarded a jail term of 20 years. Imposing a fine of Rs 5.50 lakh on the accused, the court had made it clear that the penalty, when recovered would also be paid to the victim.
Referring to “Nirbhaya” rape case, which shocked the nation almost a decade ago, the court in its 112-page judgment had observed that the incidents of sexual assault were still on the rise.
