Shiromani Akali Dal announces support for NDA’s presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu

Chandigarh, July 1

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced to support NDA’s presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu. Party president Sukhbir Singh Badal said SAD has extended support to Murmu, even though differences remain with the BJP, mainly over the premature release of Sikh prisoners.

Badal said Yashwant Sinha was a Congress candidate and Shiromani Akali Dal would never support a party that was responsible for attack on Darbar Sahib and genocide of Sikhs.

He also claimed that SAD was in favour of Murmu as she belonged to the Scheduled Tribe community and the party always stood in support of the minorities and weaker sections.

On Thursday, BJP president JP Nadda had reached out to estranged former ally SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal to seek support for NDA’s presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu.

On Thursday, BJP president JP Nadda had reached out to estranged former ally SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal to seek support for NDA’s presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu.

The decades old alliance between the BJP and Akali Dal broke down on the issue of the three farm laws which the Modi government later annulled. The estrangement had resulted in SAD leader and Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur resigning from the Union Cabinet. Both parties contested the Punjab assembly polls held earlier this year without much success.

Meanwhile, BJP-led NDA’s presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu started her campaign today from Himachal Pradesh. She arrived at Baddi today to meet the BJP MPs and MLAs and seek their support for her upcoming election.

All MLAs including Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, state party president and Shimla MP Suresh Kashyap, cabinet ministers, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Thakur were among those present on the occasion.

On her return, she will interact with elected representatives from Haryana. Both states are ruled by BJP and Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha, is expected to get the support of the majority elected representatives from these states.

Murmu’s visit to Himachal Pradesh assumes significance as the state is going to polls later this year and has tribal population in few pockets, the sources said.
