Sikander Singh Maluka skips SAD panel meeting amid ticket row

Chandigarh, August 31

Day after Sikander Singh Maluka asked the SAD to adopt “one family, one ticket” norm after his son was denied ticket for the Assembly elections, the former minister today skipped party’s core-committee meeting held here this evening.

While party sources said SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was in touch with Maluka, there was no official word on whether the latter had agreed to contest from Rampura Phul.

Maluka had demanded “one family, one ticket” norm in the party. He is seeking a ticket for himself from Maur and for his son Gurpreet Singh Maluka from Rampura Phul. However, the party has announced Maluka as candidate from Rampura Phul. The core committee members reportedly avoided a discussion on the issue. A party spokesperson said the committee primarily discussed the farmers’ agitation and “appreciated the categorical statements of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha leaders against attempts by disruptive elements to sabotage peaceful activity of farmer-friendly political parties and weaken the cause of the farmers”.

The committee members felt “mischievous elements are working towards imposing President’s rule in Punjab and inflicting an unrepresentative, anti-Punjab and anti-farmer establishment on people”. The party stated it would continue to stand by any programme announced by the farm unions to get the three central laws repealed. — TNS
