The Sikh Regiment, most decorated among Indian Army regiments, on Saturday celebrated 175 years of its raising at Sikh Regimental Centre in Ramgarh Cantt, Jharkhand.
The ceremonial celebrations commenced with the customary paying of homage at the Regimental War Memorial, followed by ‘Sainik Sammelan’, which was addressed by Lt Gen PGK Menon, the Colonel of the Sikh regiment.
Lt Gen Menon, who is commanding the Leh-based 14 Corps, addressed the troops via video-conferencing. He also released the ‘First Day Cover’ to commemorate the day.
A well-produced ‘SIKH’ magazine has been brought out and it details each of the battles fought by Sikh troops. The regiment also unveiled ‘Dodransbicentennial’ silver trophy.
The first battalion of the Sikh Regiment was raised on July 30, 1846, as XIV Ferozepore Sikhs. The regiment fought several successful battles, including World War-I and II, in pre-Independence era. The 1897 battle of Saragarhi is still regarded the bravest with display of raw courage following the ethos of ‘last man-last round’.
