Teachers protest near Punjab CM's house

Morinda, December 19

A large number of temporary teachers demanding regular jobs staged a protest with the body of their colleague Gurpreet Singh (35), near the Chief Minister’s residence, on Sunday. The protesters claimed that Gurpreet, who went back to his home after participating in the ongoing dharna in Morinda, suffered a heart attack as he was under stress of not having a regular job.

The agitators also demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh and a government job for a kin of Gurpreet.

Gagan Abohar, convener, Temporary Teachers’ Union, said, “Around 13,000 teachers have been teaching in government schools for the past 18 years on a meager salary of Rs 5,500- 6,000.”

She said they were holding a dharna since November 21. The union leader said a meeting was held with the district administration in the morning, but after getting no assurance, they decided not to cremate the body of their colleague and continue with the stir. — TNS
