Three nabbed for murder of AAP councillor

Malerkotla, August 1

The police claimed to have cracked the murder case of AAP councillor Mohammad Akbar, who was shot dead on Sunday in a gym, near the Ludhiana bypass. Cops have identified five persons and nabbed three of them so far.

Inspector General (Patiala Range) Mukhwinder Singh Chhina and Malerkotla Senior Superintendent of Police Avneet Kaur Sidhu said Akbar had rented his shop to Wasim Iqbal around 14 years ago at Grewal Chowk, where the latter had been selling auto spare parts. Akbar had invested around Rs 2.5 crore in the trade with Iqbal in 2015.

For the past one week, Akbar had been demanding his money back from Iqbal.

The IG said, “Instead of returning the money, Iqbal along with his relative Mohammad Aasif, hatched a conspiracy to murder Akbar. Three days ago, Iqbal and his two friends — Mohammad Sadav and Tehseem — of Saharanpur went to Bagra village near Shamli and purchased a country-made pistol along with five live cartridges for Rs 9,000.”

In the wee hours on July 31, Iqbal gave the pistol and cartridges to Aasif, who along with his friend Mohammad Murshad, fired at Akbar in the gym, he said.

The SSP said, “We have arrested Iqbal, Sadav and Tehseem while raids are on to nab Aasif and Murshad.” — TNS
