Varsity, college teachers in Punjab go on mass leave; want UGC scales

Doraha, September 3

Over 2,000 university and college teachers, under the banner of the Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (PFCUTO), went on mass casual leave today to protest the “unwarranted delay in the implementation of UGC grades” in Punjab and Chandigarh.

Teachers marched to Chandigarh and proceeded towards the CM’s residence, where they were stopped by the Chandigarh Police.

SS Brar, OSD to the Chief Minister, reached the spot and heard the teachers. A memorandum was handed over to Brar, who assured that the matter would be handled positively so that the issues could be solved at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the teachers have decided to hold continuous protests from Teacher’s Day, ie September 5 onwards. A fast would be started at Panjab University on that day. In order to ensure minimum loss of study, the teachers would protest just for two hours daily on the campus itself.

HS Kingra, president of PFUCTO, said Punjab was the only state which was yet to implement UGC pay scales notified in November 2017 and UGC regulations notified in 2018. — OC
