Ropar: A water sports centre will be set up in the town, said Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer during a visit to the rowing academy run by Sports Department on Friday. The minister, accompanied by local MLA Dinesh Kumar Chadha, interacted with sportspersons. Hayer said Punjab had vast potential in water sports and to draw people to the sport, a centre would be set up at Ropar. He also announced upgrade of Nehru Sadium. tns
Man chops off woman’s finger
Muktsar: The police have booked a person, who allegedly under the influence of ‘chitta’, chopped off the finger of a woman at Badhai village. The accused Husandeep Singh in a video said: “I had an affair with the woman and had gone to meet her. However, she hatched a conspiracy to kill me.” The woman, however, claimed: “He entered our residence by scaling the wall on the intervening night of April 11-12. When my husband objected, he tried to attack him. As I tried to save my husband, he chopped off my finger.” tns
4 drug peddlers nabbed
Abohar: The police have seized 7 gm of heroin from Gurjit Singh, a resident of Chak 4-B village. Last year, he was arrested by the Abohar police for possessing 10-gm heroin and was released on bail recently. In another incident, police seized 12 gm of heroin from Abid of Nohar. Amit Singh of Gidderbaha and Sandeep Singh Goldy of Tharajwala Lambi were nabbed with 10 kg of poppy husk. The accused have been booked under the NDPS Act. OC
