Tarn Taran, January 1
Ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit, SAD leader and former minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon today said the state’s economy needed to be brought back on track as he raised the demands of border farmers.
Addressing mediapersons at Kairon village, he said there was a need to stabilise the state economy as it was under a tremendous debt burden, adding he would bring these issues to the notice of the PM during his state visit.
Questioning certain parties’ move to lure voters by providing Rs 1,000 per month, he said it would only deteriorate the state’s fiscal health. He would soon write to the Union Government in this regard.
He said most of the social welfare schemes such as ‘atta dal’ were centrally sponsored and these needed to be continued to improve the state’s economy.
He said the farmers having land across the fencing had not been paid compensation since 2017 as the state government had failed to submit the utilisation certificate to the Centre owing to an alleged fraud.
Kairon demanded resumption of international trade through the rail route via the Khemkaran border. — OC
