A woman named Babita Rani strangulated her five-year-old son Biraj to death at her residence in Bhanohar village in Mullanpur Dakha in this district.
The incident came to the fore on Thursday when the child’s body was recovered from the village pond.
After committing the murder, Babita had put Biraj’s body in a sack and thrown it in the pond.
Police said the woman, along with her son and husband Shyam Lal, had shifted from Hasanpur to Bhanohar a few months back.
Shyam Lal, a native of Uttar Pardesh, is a gardener by profession.
On Wednesday, when the news about the mysterious disappearance of Biraj spread in the village, villagers started searching for the child.
To prevent villagers from suspecting her role behind the murder, Babita accompanied them in the search.
When villagers checked the CCTV cameras, they saw a woman heading towards the pond with a sack on her head.
They questioned Babita who confessed that she had strangulated Biraj and dumped his body in the pond.
Shyam Lal said three of his children had also died under mysterious circumstances in the past and it could be possible that his wife was behind their murders as well.
SHO Inspector Ajitpal Singh said on the complaint of Shyam Lal, a case was registered against his wife Babita and she was arrested.
