MCD has begun the controlled demolition of a dangerous building adjoining the site of the deadly Satya Niketan PG collapse in South Delhi. The five-storey PG building collapsed on September 6, killing seven people, including five Delhi University students. Following the tragedy, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi declared the neighbouring structure at Property No. 13 dangerous and ordered its demolition. The building had housed a girls’ paying guest accommodation and was evacuated after the collapse. MCD officials began dismantling parts of the structure, including its water tank and tin roofs, as authorities moved to prevent another potential disaster. Several other buildings in the densely populated Satya Niketan area have also been asked to vacate their premises. The incident has intensified scrutiny of building safety, unauthorised construction and regulation of private PG accommodations in Delhi. The Delhi government has announced tighter safety measures and is working on a proposed framework to regulate PGs and hostels.
