Doctor couple booked under PNDT Act

Fatehgarh Sahib, April 5

A Health Department team from Sirsa in Haryana raided a nursing home and surgical clinic on the Railway Road in Sirhind and caught a doctor-couple conducting sex determination in violation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act. The team seized a laptop and DVR from the clinic.

Dr Budh Ram, PNDT officer, Sirsa, said the CMO, Sirsa, had information that a tout was taking pregnant women to nursing homes for sex determination by charging hefty fee. The SMO formed a four-member team for investigation. The informer gave the contact number of Sonia, who deals on behalf of nursing homes.

On contacting her, she demanded Rs 38, 000 for sex determination. A sum of Rs 20,000 was paid in advance, he said. “Sonia fixed an appointment with the doctor and called us near Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib in Patiala,” said the officer.

Dr Karan Sagar, District Family Welfare Officer, Fatehgarh Sahib, said the health department had lodged an FIR against the two doctors in this regard. Dr Anil Kumar of Nath Nursing Home claimed they did not conduct any such test and had been falsely implicated. — OC
