Ropar: Women block road, want liquor vend shut

Ropar, July 21

Protesting against the opening of a liquor vend near their village, a large number of women of Khad Bathlore village staged a dharna on the Ropar-Nurpur Bedi road here today. They removed the kiosk brought by the liquor vend contractor.

Around 10 am, a large number of women from the village reached the spot on the Ropar-Nurpur Bedi road and removed the kiosk. They blocked the traffic on both sides, demanding that the permission to set up the liquor vend near their village be cancelled immediately.

Sarpanch Sukhwinder Kaur, who was leading the protest, said the authorities didn’t bother about talking to the panchayat before allowing the contractor to open the liquor vend near the village. They got to know about it yesterday and removed the kiosk. When the contractor started setting up the kiosk again, the local residents blocked the road, she added. — TNS

Will withdraw nod for vend: Official

The decision to open a liquor vend near the village was taken considering that illicit liquor was being sold by unscrupulous elements in the area. Now, the permission for opening the new vend will be withdrawn. — Gurinder Pal Singh, Circle excise inpsector
