The Student Federation of India (SFI) Bhadrachalam town committee demanded a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the death of a seven-year-old Adivasi girl from Gollaguppa village, adjoining Bhadrachalam, in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.

An SFI delegation led by town committee secretary K. Ravinder visited several ailing Adivasi children from Gollaguppa who were undergoing treatment at the Government Area Hospital in Bhadrachalam on Wednesday morning.

The deceased, Madivi Jamuna, 7, reportedly died a few hours after being administered a chloroquine tablet at a medical camp in her native Yetapaka mandal of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, sources said.

Around 20 Adivasi children who reportedly fell ill after consuming the tablets were admitted to the Government Area Hospital in Telangana’s temple town of Bhadrachalam on Wednesday.

Their condition was stated to be stable.

Yetapaka was among five Gram Panchayats that were transferred to Andhra Pradesh under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act in 2014.

In a statement, Mr. Ravinder demanded immediate measures to ensure the appointment of adequate health personnel and provision of emergency medical care in the five Gram Panchayats, including Yetapaka, adjoining Bhadrachalam.

He also urged the government to resolve the ‘administrative issues’ concerning the five Gram Panchayats at the earliest to safeguard the health of people living in the areas bordering the Bhadrachalam Agency.

Mr. Ravinder further demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government provide an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh to Jamuna’s bereaved family.
